Understanding Louisiana Child Support Laws
In Louisiana, child support is governed by the Louisiana Child Support Guidelines, found primarily in Louisiana Revised Statutes Title 9, Chapter 4 (Sections 9:315 et seq.), which establish how support amounts are calculated and enforced. When a judge is deciding child support, there is a rebuttable presumption that the amount determined under these guidelines is the correct amount of support. However, the court may deviate from the guidelines if strict application would not be in the child’s best interests or would be inequitable to either parent. R.S. 9:315.1 outlines this presumption and the conditions under which deviation may occur.
